Social Mobility

At Capp, we are passionate about social mobility.

We are signatories to the Social Mobility Business Compact, but more importantly, social mobility runs throughout the heart and soul of our work.

Fundamentally, strengths-based recruitment supports social mobility, because strengths-based recruitment is focused on job fit and future potential, rather than just past background and achievements. This is embedded in Jobmi, our job matching marketplace.

We also have three specific products for helping organisations embed and enhance social mobility throughout their people and recruitment practices:

Social Mobility Benchmark Survey

The Social Mobility Benchmark Survey is used to assess the social background of your employee population, and covers the following main areas:

  • Educational background – to provide data on school and university attendance.
  • Social background – to provide data on the respondent’s parental and family circumstances.
  • Current attainment – to describe what the respondent has achieved to this point in their life.
  • Demographic descriptors – to provide monitoring and analytics information on gender, age and ethnicity.

Our analysis focuses on both of relative social mobility and intergenerational social mobility, the two priorities of the Social Mobility and Child Poverty Commission.

Output: A benchmark report that provides an overview of the social backgrounds of your employee population, comparing this to other industry sectors and populations as appropriate.

Social Mobility Contextual Data for Recruitment

We provide a hosted solution to enable you to collect Social Mobility Contextualised Data for Recruitment. This hosted solution can be integrated as part of your candidate recruitment flow, or provided as a standalone service. Our questions cover the following main areas:

  • Educational background – to provide data on school and university attendance.
  • Social background – to provide data on the respondent’s parental and family circumstances.
  • Current attainment – to describe what the respondent has achieved to this point in their life.
  • Demographic descriptors – to provide monitoring and analytics information on gender, age and ethnicity.

These questions, and our analysis of them, also draw from wider publicly available data sources (e.g., ONS, Acorn, DfE, OFSTED, HEFCE, together with a number of FOI requests), in order to generate an algorithmic computation of Social Mobility Distance Travelled – how much a person has achieved in their life, relative to their background circumstances.

Again, our analysis focuses on both of relative social mobility and intergenerational social mobility, the two priorities of the Social Mobility and Child Poverty Commission.

Output: For each candidate, an algorithmic social mobility score that can be used to provide social mobility monitoring, or to give richer contextual data to inform recruitment decisions.

Social Mobility Healthcheck for your Recruitment Process

The Social Mobility Healthcheck is a consultant-led audit of your recruitment process and practices, focused on highlighting areas where best recruitment practice and social mobility outcomes can be enhanced and improved. The Healthcheck covers:

  • Attraction and candidate sourcing – to ensure you are reaching the right candidates for your organisation.
  • Recruitment process review – to examine your recruitment process overall, highlighting areas where it can be improved to deliver better outcomes
  • Assessment audit – to review your use of assessments and assessment analytics, highlighting opportunities to improve diversity and inclusion and avoid adverse impact.
  • Analytics and adverse impact audit – to analyse the progression of candidates from different groups throughout your current process, including a specific focus on adverse impact and recommendations to address this where needed.

Output: Clear and practical recommendations for how your recruitment process can be improved, to ensure that you find the best talent for your business in ways that improve diversity, enhance social mobility and deliver improved business performance.
